Katherine Greene Wants Out of Her Marriage
In the film set in 1886 when women were under strict social constraints and the personal and social costs of divorce were extremely high, we see Katherine Greene making the personal and emotional costly decision to seek a divorce from her husband Peter.
As one can expect, Peter does not take the news well.
Even more inconveniently, they are to hold a formal dinner that very night for the high society guests that they hope will reinforce their social standing.
As the guests arrive, so do the cracks in Katherine and Peter's marriage that they have worked to conceal behind the facade of their elegant home.
We hope Plucked receives the critical acclaim and popular success it deserves.

The Dinner Party Is Built Around Appearances
Most of Plucked takes place during one important, socially-charged evening.
At first, everyone is supposed to conduct him or herself in accordance with the formal social standards of the time.
Guests are invited to and served dinner. The hosts attempt to keep up appearances and give the impression all is well.
But facades begin to break.
Secret doings begin to be revelaed, and the characters become increasingly dominated by jealousy and revenge. (Vimeo)
This structure is why the film has a dark-comedy feel.
People of this period are surrounded by social norms and expectations of appropriate behavior, but their true emotions are unleashed and become increasingly chaotic.
Although the film is set in a time of social strictures and elegance, the uncontrolled emotions of the characters create humor that is also somewhat subversive.

Jared Canfield plays Peter Greene, Katherine's estranged husband.

The importance of these areas of production for a period film are obvious.
In order for Plucked to work, the audience needs to buy the late 1800s world, because the story plays off of the contradiction of very rigid social rules of etiquette versus very unruly and unacceptable behavior.
The movie was filmed in Newport, Rhode Island, which has a lot of architecture from the Gilded Age.
Current listings for the theatrical release put the run time at 110 minutes.
The marriage drama is playing against a dark comedy.
While Katherine's marriage being on the rocks is a serious subject, comedy is clearly the focus of Plucked.
Katherine wants to be independent and the divorce serves as a rebellion against societal constraints.
The dinner party becomes a metaphorical pressure cooker for people to act out and stop being polite to each other.
The biggest contrast throughout the film is wanting to act a certain way and what you are actually feeling.
It's smart the filmmakers left a lot of the answers to Katherine's divorce and the dinner up to the audience to decide.
Finding those answers isn't necessary to appreciate the movie.
