One of television's most recognizable futuristic families is preparing for a big screen return. Warner Bros. Pictures is developing a live-action adaptation of The Jetsons, the classic Hanna-Barbera animated series that imagined family life in the future.
Jim Carrey is set to star, and Colin Trevorrow is set to direct the film.
The project was announced as part of Warner Bros.'s August 2022 development slate.
While the studio has given an adaptation the green light, other vital details have not been announced including the full cast, story, and a release date.
What Is the New Jetsons Movie About?
The new Jetsons movie will be based on the classic Hanna-Barbera series of the same name.
The story follows George Jetson and his family which consists of his wife Jane, children Judy and Elroy, and their family dog Astro.
Rosie the robotic maid is also a part of the family.
Unlike other family based sitcoms of that time, The Jetsons placed situations of family life in the future and focused on problems of family life with the inventions and technology that filled that future.
Family humor was derived from issues of parenting and marriage.
The new movie will be a cinematic adaptation of this classic Hanna-Barbera series.
Other details like plot and character relationships have not been determined.
Jim Carrey to Play George?
Warner Bros. has confirmed Jim Carrey will be starring in the upcoming Jetsons film adaptation.

They have not confirmed who Carrey will be playing.
Reportedly they are looking into his George Jetson being the main focus, but studio sources said that identifying Carrey as George Jetson is speculation at this point.

The production has not authorized any digital distributors.
Colin Trevorrow is said to be at the helm of the live-action adaptation.
He is best known for directing Jurassic World and its latest installment Jurassic World Dominion.
His body of work also consists of the independent science fiction film Safety Not Guaranteed.
He is experienced with combining previously established popular cultures with contemporary elements of filmmaking. This could be helpful when dealing with complicated, futuristic environments.
Joe Epstein has also been associated with the writing of the screenplay with Trevorrow.
However, Warner Bros. has not publicly revealed the final writing team of the screenplay.
The principal staff and key creatives also remain unidentified.
Though Trevorrow is the name often associated with the project, a specific timeline has not been given.
The first season of The Jetsons aired on ABC in the fall of 1962.
As with all projects produced by Hanna-Barbera, the show imagined a picture of the future. With The Jetsons, that fantasy focused on what life might be like when and if people could live above the ground instead of on it.
The program wasn't an instant hit, but later gained popularity when syndication started airing the show and Hanna-Barbera produced more episodes.
The characters are synonymous with the fantasy and comedy of science fiction.
Thirty years ago, most of the technology depicted in the original show was still in the realm of fantasy.
Automation and voice-activation have become part of our everyday lives. Virtual meetings have been made a reality. Fantastic inventions of the past are part of our world now.
The Jetsons has always been about the technology of the future and what life might be like in the fast-paced world of tomorrow. It's about balancing what life might be like in the future with what's going on in the present and relating to the frustrations of modern life in a humorous way.
The show has always struck a perfect balance.
Unlike many of its competitors, The Jetsons has never been made in live-action. The technology of the 1960s was put to good use in imagining what the future might be like.
In order for a live-action Jetsons to be successful, it will need to strike the same balance as its predecessors.
Trying to bring the franchise to the big screen without the help of animation has been difficult. In the past, attempts to bring a live-action Jetsons to the big screen never made it there.
After the successful theatrical run of Jetsons: The Movie in 1990, not much has been done to create new content for the franchise, not even direct-to-video movies.
With new animation and visual effects technology, the studio is trying to give the characters a new look for the 21st century audience.
Quest terms like Watch 123movies suggest there will be no official streaming of the project by Warner Bros.
Release dates for the project have yet to be announced.
There are indications that the new Jetsons movie may be released after 2027. The theatrical opening date has not been confirmed.
Along with Carrey and Trevorrow, several other key players have not been announced, including the main cast members, the locations where the movie will be filmed, and the film's production crew.
The trailers have also not been released.
Updating the Jetsons with modern special effects and adding an expressive performer has the potential to reintroduce this classic TV family to new audiences.
Until the movie is released, many unanswered questions will remain, including how faithful the movie will be to the original, when the movie will be released, who the main cast members will be, what the story will be, and how the special effects will be integrated into the film.
